Where’s Wehr? How many times in my over 30 year career with Wehr Nature Center have we heard that joke? We still all chuckle at it. For me though “Where’s Wehr”? is much more than the physical place of Wehr. As one of the Outreach naturalists, I with many others have been able to take the Wehr mission throughout Milwaukee County and beyond. I love getting to meet students at the County Park in their neighborhood—Brown Deer, Scout Lake, Jacobus, Greenfield, Grant, Falk… I love helping them make the connection with nature right in their own back yards. I love encouraging them to bring their families back and share their discoveries at “their” park. That is one of the things I’ve missed the most during the pandemic this year—being in those special places engaging with eager young minds.

My children still laugh at the joke, “Where’s Wehr”? They have grown up with Wehr. Stephanie loved volunteering at Prairie Days when she was younger. Nathanael is always eager for pumpkin patrol at Halloween. I “dragged” them (and my husband) around to parks on the weekends to share special discoveries I had made with a field trip during the week. I also had the privilege during their elementary school years to share Wehr’s passion for nature with their classrooms. I was affectionately known as the “Squirrel Lady” and Mrs. Gobble, Gobble by some of the younger children.

As the Volunteer Coordinator at Wehr, I love seeing children who participated in our environmental education programming come back as high school and college students to volunteer—to give back to an organization that made an impact on their lives.

These connections to the natural world, especially in an urban area, are so important for children…for everyone. Wehr Nature Center (WNC) is an urban nature preserve offering natural history and community science/service programs to all ages throughout Milwaukee County. Staff and volunteers inspire people to explore and value the natural world. Wehr is open daily, year-round.  

Friends of Wehr Nature Center is a non-profit organization that supports and promotes Wehr Nature Center and its  programs.
